Classic game remakes compilation

More and more old classic games are being remade for Commodore 64. In many cases, these remakes include bug fixes, better graphics, better controls and even enhanced features.

Burger Time

The new version of the game has even more similarities with the original version for Arcade machines. The essence of the game has not changed, the task is to make hamburgers while avoiding enemies.


China Miner

Arlasoft has revamped the famously difficult 1984 platform game and dressed it up in a Christmas outfit with a new name.


Commando

As you can see in the attached picture, they have tried to implement as much detail as possible from the Arcade version, such as the helicopter. They’ve also managed to remove one of the old version’s annoying problems, the graphical flickering, which makes for a much more enjoyable gameplay experience.

The game also features a beautiful title screen and a revamped menu system:


Dig Dug

In this version, the playfields are procedurally generated.

New features include randomly generated maps, better graphics and a faster paced game that is closer to the Arcade version.


Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong (2016, Oxyron)

One of Nintendo’s most popular games also deserved to be a much more beautiful and enjoyable game on the Commodore 64. Atarisoft, and a few years later Ocean, also released their own versions, and the lessons learned from these were used to create a brand new version.


Frogger

Frogger Arcade (2016, Digital Monastery / Hokuto Force)

As with Donkey Kong, there were several versions of the game before the latest one, Frogger Arcade, was released. This game version tries to bring the arcade version to Commodore 64 owners.


Galaga

Galaga (2021, Arlasoft)

Previous versions of the popular space shooter were so simple that it was time for a modern version. In addition to the graphical innovations, the other features of the original, arcade version of the game were also implemented using the technical capabilities of the Commodore 64.


Galaxian

Galaxian DX (2021, Arlasoft)

After the creation of the new Galaga, a modern version of the game Galaxian was created. In addition to the graphical innovations to enjoy the original arcade game on Commodore 64, the programmer ported the arcade code directly to the enemy movements and timings.


Ghosts’n Goblins

More detailed graphics, even closer to the level of the arcade.

List of major improvements:

– Two completely new levels added.Level 6 has an additional final room.
– Existing 4 levels are expanded to be twice the size of the original.
– All levels have completely new graphics and level designs applied.
– All levels have unique new tunes added which were newly composed.
– New Sound Effects added or changed.
– New sprite multiplexer coded, which will minimize glitches.
– Intro sequence added where Satan abducts the Princess.
– Game Map added, which shows your progress when you are killed or you reach incoming level.
– Game Complete animation added.
– Game Over sequence added.
– Two new Bosses added for levels 5 and 6. They are bigger than any existing enemies in the original game.
– Added a new Jumping Skeleton enemy in levels 5 and 6.
– Moving Clouds recoded so they can be used on level 5.
– Arthur now can turn around when he jumps and he can shoot backwards.
– Added an improved Title/Loading screen with new tune.
– Weapons are now improved and all of them now actually make sense.
– Enemies have improved AI – not perfect but much better than original.
– Levels 1-4 are done in 2 parts now, but transition between them is fully seamless.
– Flying Knights at level 2 can only be shot from behind as in Arcade.
– Zombies first dig out some dirt so you can spot them before they kill you.
– Collision detection is drastically improved – you won’t get killed when a bullet flies over your head anymore.
– Dragon Boss covers more of the screen area now and you need to shoot his head three times, and he won’t shoot so many bullets anymore.
– House Ogres are easier to kill now.
– ‘Sparkles’ are now visible when you hit an enemy.
– Weapons that are dropped depend on the level you are playing, so you cannot get the shield in the beginning.
– Pause Game and Quit Game added, which can be activated by Run/Stop key.
– Arthur can jump over obstacles now even if he touches them. In the original he only jumped up.
– Time limit is now different for each level.
– 7 Trainers added for your pleasure.


Hunter’s Moon

Hunter’s Moon Remastered is a fully remastered, overhauled, and updated version of the seminal C64 shoot ‘em up.

Pacman

The programmer’s goal here is too to copy the Arcade version of the game as perfectly as possible using the Commodore 64’s capabilities. Among other things, the development includes the famous “kill screen”, which appears when level 255 is completed.


Supremacy

An improved, Cartridge-version of the 1991 game with mouse support, additional graphics and many other improvements. It was made in 2021 thanks to the programmer group named Excess for celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the game.
